HEALTH PREVENTION

NAIDOC NAIDOC celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The Centre for Population Health team joined other WSLHD services and the community to celebrate this occasion at 11 NAIDOC events this year. Team members spent time with the community to answer questions, chat about what we do and provide information about the free programs and services available. Our Health Promotion and Environmental Health teams arranged fun activities for children to raise awareness of good health behaviours, such as hand hygiene and healthy snacking. Our Immunisation team provided free flu vaccinations and helped parents requesting to check their child’s immunisation status. Advice for protecting against mosquito-borne diseases and the dangers of vaping was also offered by our Infectious Diseases and Health Promotion teams.

Our Immunisation team attended 11 NAIDOC events and administered 124 flu vaccines to local Aboriginal community members.

“I like helping people and making them happy. Sometimes I’m answering phone calls from the elderly, they are lost on where to go and need help, so I guide them in the right direction or provide correct contact details on who can help them. This is an enjoyable part of my job as well as learning new skills in my everyday tasks. I felt proud when I gained a permanent role with the Centre for Population Health.” – Neelam Kumari, Administration Officer CPH
