NSW Refugee Health Plan 2020-2025 (draft) Goals and Strategic Priorities

Support and enhance mainstream health programs to ensure they are modified and/or targeted to overcome the unique service access barriers experienced by people from refugee backgrounds (Refer to: 1.2.6, 2.1.4, 4.1.5) Support and promote a holistic model of care to clinicians working with the NSW public health system, as well as primary care, including considering the person and their family context, not just their presenting issue. (Refer to: 1.2.6, 1.2.7, 2.1.1, 2.1.2) Continue to support and enhance healthcare services with designated positions to work with and respond to the healthcare needs of people from refugee backgrounds (Refer to: 9.1.1 - 9.1.3) Continue to support and promote statewide specialised refugee and multicultural health services to meet the healthcare needs of people from refugee backgrounds (Refer to: 2.1.5, 2.1.8, 2.1.9, 4.2.1 - 4.2.3) Address specific services access issues, in particular access to mental and oral health services, including: • Continue to support and promote Mental Health – Community Living Support for Refugees • Ensure that people from refugee backgrounds and asylum seekers are considered as a priority population in public oral health service planning • Ensure that relevant oral and mental health access information is available in easy to understand formats and languages most commonly spoken by people from refugee backgrounds (5.1.1) • Ensure NSW Health Directives / WSLHD Policy support access to public healthcare services for asylum seekers living in the community • Develop WSLHD Implementation plan for the Asylum seeker policy PD2020_039 Medicare Ineligible Asylum Seekers – Provision of Specified Public Health Services Medicare Ineligible Asylum Seekers - Provision of Specified Public Health Services Provide training for staff that improves their capacity to work in a culturally responsive and trauma-informed way, including on-the-job training and access to information to improve organisational health literacy (Refer to: 5.2.3, 5.2.2, 8.1.2, 8.1.5) Provide support to staff working with clients from refugee backgrounds, focusing on vicarious trauma and workforce burnout. This may include improvements to guidelines about self-care Specialised services, including statewide refugee and multicultural health services, continue to support mainstream staff to provide culturally responsive, trauma-informed care. (Refer to: 4.2.1 -4.2.3) Support communication between health services to promote collaboration (Refer to: 2.1.3, 2.1.5, 4.1.5, 4.2.1 - 4.2.3)
