ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT (ALS) TEAM LEADER TRAINING IN VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) - ALS-SIMVR: The aim of the ASLH-SimVR project was to provide a virtual reality program to train nurses and doctors in critical decision making. ALS-SimVR is an Australian first, self-directed VR based application developed by clinicians for clinicians in WSLHD. All key performance indicators related to patient outcomes in ALS are recorded in the inbuilt learning management system and are available for review by both the user and their educators. The virtual reality program allows people to put on a headset in the location of their choice and practice their skills in real time, making quick decisions to ultimately save a patient’s life. As well as ALS leadership training the application also includes task trainers for VR transferable skills required by ALS providers. Including virtual models of Zoll defibrillators to allow the user to practice defibrillation, cardioversion and pacing. ALS-SimVR also includes a handover trainer which presents the user with a randomised set of patient information and a clinician they must handover the patient to. Once the user gives the handover, they can then replay their handover whilst reviewing the patient information and the ISBAR cognitive aide. The implementation of early identification systems for patient deterioration has resulted in a significant reduction of cardiac arrests in the inpatient population.
