These high percentages indicates that despite health concerns, barriers and social determinants of health, a large proportion of young people engaging with the WHIN service remained engaged with and participated in school.

The WHIN program is a collaboration between NSW Health and the NSW Department of Education, aiming to support the health and wellbeing of young people and their families to reduce health barriers with engagement in education through the placement of a WHIN within the school. The aim of this project is to reduce health barriers and improve school attendance over a 12-month period. Between January and December 2022, 6 WHINs were employed across 25 schools in WSLHD providing 512 young people and their families assistance with healthcare coordination, service navigation, and to reduce psychosocial barriers of health that may impact on a young person’s ability to reach their full potential at school.
