Pawsitive Recovery: A Diversional Therapy and PAWS Collaboration Mental health hospitalisations result in consumers experiencing isolation and stress from being away from their families and pets as well as exposure to an emotionally unstable environment. The Mental Health Occupational Therapy service developed a pet therapy initiative at Cumberland Hospital to decrease stress and improve the emotional wellbeing of consumers. The pet therapy initiative ran over 12 months and demonstrated a significant improvement in forming positive relationships between consumers, handlers and pets. The positive relationships formed with the pets also allowed the consumers to share meaningful stories about their own life experiences in a safe environment. Consumer surveys identified overall improved mood and social interaction, with consumers stating they felt “happier” after the pet therapy.
